Hello! I’ve had a little bit of a blogging break, and a little bit of a revamp! The break was/is mostly due to having done nothing noteworthy enough to blog about, so I left Furiosa to sit here for a little while. I guess that means it’s probably time for an update, so here goes…
I’ve spent the last few weeks settling back into life in Essex, and to be honest, it’s been much harder than I imagined. I miss Edinburgh so, so much. I miss my friends, and the little life I had made for myself there. And even though staying in Edinburgh wasn’t a viable option, having left it is the worst. Brentwood is much more… tanned? than I remember – ha. I don’t want to sound too glum about it, and there are up-sides, obviously. Spending time with my family, and being able to see Brooke and Matt, and Helen, Lushy, and Rachel, is great, and I am very, very grateful for how awesome they’ve all been when I’m sure I’m being a complete pain the majority of the time. I need to try to not be so hard on myself, because I cut myself far less slack than I do anyone else, and it’s not doing me many favours. Waking myself up at 2am because I’m holding my breath in my sleep is not the one. I’m trying to be a bit more positive, and to worry a bit less, so we’ll see how that goes.
My new job is going well, and I don’t think I’ve messed anything up too badly yet! I’m getting the hang of policy wordings and underwriting decisions again pretty quickly, so that’s a good sign, I think, and it’s quite nice to have a job with “normal” hours, and evenings and weekends to do things. I haven’t not worked weekends for almost five years, so it’s still pretty novel.
Speaking of evenings and weekends, I treated myself to a gorgeous edition of Sylvia Plath’s Ariel and signed up for the Poetry School‘s 10-week reading group. We’re halfway through, and it’s been amazing so far. I’ve not said much on the forum for it, because there’s so much to take in, but it’s been split into a different theme each week, with about three of the poems for each theme. My only criticism is that there are writing prompts at the end of each week and my god, Plath’s poetry makes me feel like I should never ever attempt writing anything. It’s so beautiful and haunting. Agh.
Writing-wise, though, things are going pretty well. I had a little poem published in the fourth issue of Crab Fat late last month (you can read it on p122, if you like!), and I’ve been asked to contribute a chapter to a hard copy book that’s come about as a sort of continuation from the conference I did in Oxford, back in September. That’s incredibly exciting. The conference paper was only about 3,000 words, and the chapter’ll need to be around 9,000, so I get to do research. That’s far too much excitement. Ha.
Severine reopened for submissions for the second issue, and I have had so. many. poems and illustrations and choosing is going to be so hard.
So there have been lots of good things.
I bought another bookcase, and finally unpacked the last box of books, and now there aren’t any on the floor. Yay! + I’ve seen SO MUCH of Brooke and Matt, and they are the best. And I’ve had dinners with Rachel and Lushy and Helen, and they are the best too. I went for dinner and cocktails with my new work colleagues, and I went to Ikea with mum and tested out the new vegan meatballs. Yeah, I eat a lot + Florence’s new album is awesome + All the flowers on my orchid came out + Street names in England are ridiculous + Sarah brought sunflowers home from work and hers is winning, but mine is catching up + My walk home from the station is an hour long, but it’s pretty + Dinner at Giraffe with Sarah was amaaaazing kale enchildas and “crunchy munchy seeds” – ha!
Last but not least, there’s finally a new layout!
I did love the old one, but I was starting to feel like it was a bit busy, with links and stuff everywhere. I had a little bit of a faff around, and I like this a lot. It’s much simpler, much more obvious where the new posts are, and comments and shares and things are much easier to get at. So, yes. It might shuffle about a little bit more, but what do you think?
So that’s my little update. Hopefully it won’t be too long until the next one!
