Northern Ballet : The Great Gatsby

(image from here)

This weekend, I finally met the lovely Safiya when we went to see the Northern Ballet’s stunning adaptation of The Great Gatsby at Sadler’s Wells.

Needless to say, it was breathtakingly beautiful. The music, set and costumes were perfect, and the dancers were incredible. I very much doubt that Luhrmann’s Gatsby is going to live up to the beauty of this adaptation. As the novel is one of my favourites, I’m really apprehensive about the film (I’ve been trying to avoid reviews, but what I’ve glimpsed hasn’t been great…), but the ballet managed to tell the story without any of the language that makes it such an amazing book. The pas de deux between Daisy and Gatsby was amazing, you can watch it in rehearsal here, but you’ll have to imagine it with a full orchestra and these costumes.

We went to the last night of the tour, but there is still a Mixed Programme in Leeds in June.
